| I graduated from medical school in 2006. I am currently a third year resident in Emergency Medicine. My experience working in an ER in Detroit has provided me with a unique perspective on health care in the United States. Working in an ER in Michigan during some of the worst economic times in generations, I have seen first-hand that Emergency Medicine has it's own challenges. I chose this specialty because I never wanted to turn a patient away due to their inability to pay. I love that my job is simply to take care of people, without regard to financial status. Unfortunately, one of the downsides to Emergency Medicine is that we are often unable to provide definitive care to our patients. Every day we face challenges involving patients who refuse a necessary admission because they know they will not be able to afford their hospital bills. Every day we take care of patients who we know will not be able to follow up with a private physician because they are uninsured. Every day we write prescriptions that we fear will never be filled because patients simply can not afford their medications. And every day we take care of preventable problems all because people in this country have no other access to health care but the ER. I am here to share the stories of the people we care for in the ER. I share their stories in the hopes that one day no one will ever have to refuse health care because they can not afford it. I share their stories so that one day no one will be forced to sign out Against Advice. |
